This year the Atlantic Chapter of the High Tech Crime Investigation Association (HTCIA) has moved its annual “Free” public forum on Internet Safety to Fredericton.

As always this event is aimed at families, students, and teachers. Still, the computer security knowledge being shared should be of interest to all computer users, especially those who regularly visit the Internet.

We will have subject matter experts from both law enforcement agencies and the computer security industry ready to share their knowledge and to answer all your questions.

So mark the day on your calendar and be sure to attend this event. Attendance is free but the knowledge gained is invaluable. Plus there may well be a door prize for one or more students who can demonstrate their computer security savvy.

Our Preliminary list of presenters includes:

Managing Your Online Identity

I have very strong opinions on first impressions, I am an avid believer
of the phrase, ‘Don’t judge a book by it’s cover’ However, I also realize
that not everyone holds the same belief as me.

In today’s online social world
we need not only to consider your physical first impression as well as your online
impression.

Are you are familar with the notion of ‘googling yourself’? I am sure
everyone has done it at one time or another. Typed their name in the google
search box and see what pops up. What people may not realize is that many
people are also typing names (perhaps yours) into a search engine to learn
more about a person, perhaps in preparation for a meeting, an interview,
or soon afterwards.

I have recently started using a search engine designed just for this purpose.
spock.com (aka: Spock.com – the best for people search ). It is not like google, it is not a generic search engine,
it is specifically designed for looking up information about others (or yourself)
The link below is to an interesting article on their site about how they can help you manage
your online idenity.

So the next time you are meeting someone for the first time, and trying to figure the right
way to shake his/her hand, ask yourself, will this person be searching for me later?

Lessons learned from my first E-Bay sale (Now trying IPAQ 3100rx PDA)

EBay Lessons Learned

Well, the good news is, I sold my first item on E-Bay, yes the
N64 I offered on E-Bay went for about $20

The bad news, it doesn’t look like I will be paid for it, and may have to
relist it. Fortunatly, it looks like the relisting fee will be free, and I am
hoping to be able modifiy it slightly based on the lessons I have learned so far.

In the meantime, I’m doing it again this time trying to sell a slightly
broken iPAQ. The touch portion of the display is not working so if you like
to take apart things and see how they work, this might be a good deal for you.
I am also including all the accessories, 2 batteries, USB Cables, power cables and
manual. So if you have an iPAQ already this might be a good deal on extra accessories.

E-Bay Lessons Learned

It’s worth the extra $ to post into 2 categories
The title of your item is VERY important and needs to use lots of KEYWORDS
(eg: Not using the word nintendo)
Use images in earch results
Default search results are time ending soonest
It’s all about people finding it in a search
Way to ge around mulitpe images (host the file yourself !)
Well written descriptions
Do a search ourself to get an idea where it fits into things
Include Business Card, related marketing material inside the packagte
Pack everything first, invest in a scale and measure tape for shipping costs
List all items in a package in the description

Quickly and easily sign up for E-bay at http://www.bwebcentral.com/ebay/P

Catching a Virus from a photo frame

I don’t normally send out virus warning notices, there are so many it would take all of my time.

I found this one of particular interest as it affects owners of the new digital picture frames. In particular if you have purchased a frame mfg by Best Buy (Insignia Brand).

If you have one of these and have connected it your windows PC’s you might want to have a look at this.

..The joys of new technology !/P
